No trip to Malta is complete without a stop in the Silent City of Mdina. You could stay elsewhere on Malta and make a day trip to Mdina, but in truth there is so much to be seen in the ancient former capital of Malta. Why not find an amazing, historical place to stay within the old walls!

When you enter the Silent City, you are truly transported somewhere else. This town is a stone labyrinth, with history written on every surface. The population of Mdina is only about 300, the lucky few who get to call this incredible place home.

Every plaza in Mdina looks about like this (including the absolute lack of people, even in the middle of high season). Although Game of Thrones fans might just recognize this particular setting.

Is an Airbnb right for your trip to Mdina? These days, traveling with two little ones, we almost always favor Airbnbs over hotels. You can have a lot more space (without paying for a double room), a kitchen, laundry, and – on top of it all – they’re usually much less expensive.

The trade off is that no one will come and freshen your sheets, but that’s a trade I’m always willing to make.

If you want to stay within the actual Old City, there are very few hotel options. Airbnb might be your best bet, anyway! Plus you will have a connection to a local who can give you recommendations for the best places to visit and eat.

Inside or outside of the city walls?

There are some definite advantages to each! If you stay within the heart of Mdina, you’ll be staying in a historical home probably unlike anywhere you’ve ever stayed! However, there are less everyday necessities than you will find if you stay just outside of Mdina in the larger town of Rabat.

You’ll also no doubt be exploring the rest of Malta in your time here, so it might be easier to stay outside of the walls if you’re planning to base yourself here for the whole trip.

Where to stay in Mdina with kids

I’ve picked out what I think are some really great Airbnbs in and right around Mdina. One of them is actually a converted windmill! How cool is that?!

How I choose Airbnbs: I only select homes owned by Superhosts, with loads of positive reviews. I only select places with at least 1 bedroom, a kitchen, and laundry.

I don’t only list places with a crib or high chair, so be sure to double check for that if you need those items. I also don’t necessarily check for safety concerns (like stairs or balconies), so please keep that in mind as you consider what is right for your family.

Mdina is an incredibly beautiful and historically important city, and a wonderful place to stay in Malta. I hope you find the perfect lodging for your trip to Malta with kids!
