What we did & where to stay in Alberobello with a baby
I am so glad that during our road trip around the southern part of Italy, we spent a day in Alberobello. What a unique area! The town is famous for it’s trulli – whitewashed stone huts with conical tops. The trulli are a UNESCO world heritage site, and it’s no wonder why!

The trulli date from the 18th century, when they were supposedly created to avoid taxation: they were built using dry-stone masonry (no mortar), so they would be easy to disassemble when the tax inspectors were in town.
While you can actually find trulli all over the countryside in the region of Puglia (one of my favorite destinations if you want to experience Italy off the beaten path), Alberobello is unique because the whole town is an interconnected jumble of them. It’s stunning!

The pinnacles of most of the trulli are styled as a symbol – a ball, cone, disk, bowl, polyhedron, or some combination thereof. The symbol is said to be the mark of the master stonemason who built the trullo.

Many of the cones also have white symbols painted onto them. These are mostly of Christian symbolism: crosses, doves, the initials of saints, and so on.
We did not have time to stay overnight in a trullo, but there are absolutely AirBnB’s there where you can! If you’re wondering if an AirBnB is the right choice for your family, you can find my advice from staying in dozens of AirBnBs with kids here. And if you’d like up to $40 off your first stay, use this link. I’ll get a small bonus, too – so thank you!

Even if you don’t stay the night, there are trulli that are open to tour, or you can go into any of the restaurants or shops to see what its like inside.

If you are in the region of Puglia near Bari, I highly recommend that you take a day to explore Alberobello. This quaint little town is like nowhere else I’ve ever been!
So what do you think? Ready to pack your bags and head to Alberobello? What other totally unique towns have you been to? Tell me about it in the comments!

What unique buildings those are! They remind me a little of the white cities in southern Spain.
Yes, I can definitely see that as well!
I’ve never heard of this town but it’s so stunning! Those trulli are so fascinating. I haven’t explored southern italy yet so this place is going on my future itinerary!
Stunning place! i’ve only ever visited other parts of Italy and never made it to southern Italy. Maybe next time!
While I love all of Italy, I have found southern Italy to have the most unique and interesting towns. This, along with Matera, are two of my favorites!
What a discovery in southern Italy, Love especiallythe name Alberobello! , with a toddler and very much preggie!
Haha, yes this was the very end of the trip, and I was getting awfully close to the limit for flying home with that big belly!
I am driving to the Ancona area of Italy from London, UK in the summer for the family vacation and I am still debating whether to quickly make the trip south for a couple of days to explore this area. I always wanted to go to Alberobello and I can see my children running around the place being crazy 😛
If you can fit it in, I think it’s so worthwhile. The whole region of Puglia is fascinating, and you don’t necessarily have to go to Alberobello to see the trulli, but it would be pretty cool for your kids to explore!
What a charming little village! I love the typical houses, they are quite unique… And the baby is growing up!
Yes, too quickly in fact!
When we travelled in Puglia, we loved taking a day to explore the area around Alberobello. But we were sorry that we did not stay a day or two in Alberobello. It is always great to stay after the crowds go home and you can see the real local action.
Puglia is definitely on my must-see list and I would love to stay in Alborello and experience staying in a Trullo. They are so cute and totally unique. Interesting that they were only supposed to be temporary houses designed to be pulled down easily to avoid taxes? How funny.
I have never heard of this place and would love to visit especially since it’s a UNESCO site. I love visiting UNESCO sites and try to visit as many of them as I can. I wouldn’t have thought that there were Airbnbs here so I wasn’t pleasantly surprised to hear that there is.
I love Italy. This little town looks perfect for exploring.
